02/11/2011 2011 Qatar Open - ITTF Pro Tour
Korea뭩 16 year old Yang Ha Eun, the no.32 seed, caused the biggest upset to date in the Women뭩 Singles event at the Qatar Open Doha, by overcoming Singapore뭩 Feng Tianwei, the no.2 seed, in the second round of the Women뭩 Singles event on the evening of Friday 11th February 2011.
Yan Ha Eun recorded a six games victory (12-10, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-8) against the player, who in addition to being the second seed in Qatar, currently occupies the same place on the ITTF Women뭩 World Rankings.
Once again it was success for the Korean teenager in Doha, a city in which must surely enjoy playing table tennis.
ITTF Junior Circuit
In 2009 at ITTF Junior Circuit tournament in Doha, she won the Girls Singles title; her second success of what was to prove a memorable year.
She remained unbeaten on the ITTF Junior Circuit, she opened her account by winning in Bahrain before succeeding in Qatar and then won in France and on home soil in Korea before winning at the ITTF Junior Circuit Finals in Japan.
Stag Award
The end result was that the Volkswagen World Junior Championships held in the Colombian city of Cartagena de Indias at the end of the year, she received the Stag Most Improved Female Player of the Year Award.
Impressive but in 2011 in Qatar, there was a more mature player in action, a player of a higher level, a player who showed she could compete on equal terms with the best the sport has to offer
Previous Defeat
밒뭭e played Feng Tianwei once before, sighed Yang Ha Eun in an apologetic tone of voice. 밒 lost four-nil.
There was no need to apologise, it was to be expected; the occasion was the Women뭩 Singles event at the Evergrande Real Estate Asian Cup in Guangzhou in March 2010.
Receive of Service
밒n that match I received service really badly, recollected Yang Ha Eun. 밫oday I did not have the same problems; I was surprised that I didn뭪 experience too many problems receiving her service.
Receive service well and win table tennis matches; that is what Yang Ha Eun did but of course, players like Feng Tianwei, who learnt their skills in China, are noted for being good in rallies; they have a high consistency level.
Better in Rallies
밅ertainly today I was much better in the rallies, I felt confident with my backhand but definitely my forehand was much better, added Yang Ha Eun. 밒 tried to keep calm and take my chances.
Undoubtedly the Korean teenager kept very calm, there was no hysterical celebration but both Seok Ha Jung and Kim Kyung Ah were very quickly courtside to congratulate the day뭩 heroine; the congratulations were well deserved.
Five Upsets
The victory recorded by Yang Ha Eun was one of five upsets in the second round of the Women뭩 Singles event; the others being recorded by Germany뭩 Wu Jiaduo, North Korea뭩 Kim Jong, Singapore뭩 Li Jiawei and Chinese Taipei뭩 Huang Yi-Hua.
Seeded no.17, Wu Jiaduo beat Yang Ha Eun뭩 colleague, Park Mi Young (8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-7, 11-5) before Kim Jong, the no.31 seed, overcame Hong Kong뭩 Tie Yana, the no.15 seed.
Hong Kong Sadness
Defeat for Hong Kong and there was more sadness for that association, Jiang Huajun, seeded no.12, was beaten by Singapore뭩 Li Jiawei, the no.23 seed, soon after Huang Yi-Hua, the no.20 seed had ousted Li Jiawei뭩 colleague, Yu Mengyu, the no.16 seed (8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5).
Problems for five seeded players but other than Feng Tianwei, the leading names all progressed.
Ominous
Notably the Chinese sextet of Guo Yan, Ding Ning, Li Xiaoxia, Liu Shiwen, Guo Yue and Feng Yalan all booked third round places without being stretched to seven games.
Similarly, Korea뭩 Kim Kyung Ah and Seok Ha Jung, Japan뭩 Ai Fukuhara and Sayaka Hirano plus Singapore뭩 Wang Yuegu enjoyed second round success.
Pride of Place
Fine performances but on the third day of play, pride of place went to a 16 year old, the talented Yang Ha Eun.
Kim Jong, who in the first round of the Women뭩 Singles event recovered from a three games
to one deficit to beat Margaryta Pestotska, rose to the occasion to overcame Tie Yana in round two
